A RESOLUTION OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON
WHEREAS, the Trump Administration has intentionally escalated tensions with Iran.
WHEREAS, the Trump administration has unitarily withdrawn from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (Iran Nuclear Deal) negotiated by the Obama Administration, despite Iran being certified by the IAEA as being in full compliance with its provisions.
WHEREAS, the Trump administration unilaterally imposed secondary sanctions on Iranian petroleum, steel, aluminum, copper, and iron industries, in addition to previous sanctions re-imposed on Iran that had been lifted or waived under the JCPOA which targeted critical sectors of Iran’s economy, such as its energy, shipping, shipbuilding, automotive and financial system.
WHEREAS, the Trump administration has, for the first time in US history, formally labeled an element of a foreign government, Iran‘s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a designated foreign “terrorist organisation.
WHEREAS, the Trump administration has moved a carrier strike group and strategic bomber group to the Persian Gulf and proposed to move 120,000 new U.S. troops to the Middle East.
WHEREAS, the Trump administration has proposed a series of sea and air-launched missile strikes on Iranian military facilities and alleged nuclear-related targets.
WHEREAS, Iran has no responsibility for nor represents any “associated forces” of those responsible for the attacks of September 11, 2001.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1: The Democratic Party of Oregon urgently proclaims that the 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force (UAMF) may4. not be used to invade or start a war with Iran and, according to the War Powers Resolution, the President must consult and get consent from Congress to declare war.
Section 2: The Democratic Party of Oregon supports and urges the Oregon Congressional delegation vote for and swiftly pass the recently introduced bipartisan bill, ““Prevention of Unconstitutional War with Iran Act of 2019” (S. 1039/H.R. 2354)
