Resolution 2007-034: Endorsing Efforts to Bring Jimmy Carter to Oregon

A RESOLUTION OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON

WHEREAS:

The 2006 Platform of the Democratic Party of Oregon, number 5 has stated that: “We lift our eyes beyond national self interest and affirm the principle of global cooperation, working to ensure the survival and well-being of the present and future generation.” And on “Foreign policy and National Security: Engaging the World through the Strength of Diplomacy, Justice and the Rule of Law.”

WHEREAS:

Nobel Peace Laureate, President Jimmy Carter, has carried out policies of peacemaking, diplomacy, and survival and well being of the present and future generation through his peacemaking and humanitarian efforts, world-wide.

WHEREAS:

The non-partisan Jimmy Carter Oregon Committee’s sole purpose is to invite Jimmy Carter to visit and speak publicly in Oregon.

WHEREAS:

It is understood that speaking engagements and appearances by President Carter are directed toward informing the public on his views on the issues of peace, foreign relations and social justice, rather than campaigning on behalf of political candidates in Oregon.

WHEREAS:

Supporting this effort are: The Linn County Democrats, the Benton County Democrats, the Polk County Democrats, the Marion County Democrats, the nonpartisan organizations of Habitat for Humanity of Oregon and The Oregon Education Association. They are endorsing the 2008 International Non Violence Peace Conference to be held at the University of Oregon, and the project to build a Nobel Peace Laureate Monument in Eugene.

NOW THEREFORE, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON ENDORSES THE EFFORTS OF THE JIMMY CARTER OREGON COMMITTEE TO BRING PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER TO OREGON FOR SEVERAL APPEARANCES IN 2008.
