Resolution 2007-035: Supporting the Oregon Equality Act and Oregon Family Fairness Act

A RESOLUTION OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON

A RESOLUTION OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON in reference to the Oregon Equality Act of 2007 and the Oregon Family Fairness Act of 2007, and related to the Human Rights plank of the Oregon Democratic Party platform:

WHEREAS, fairness for all and equal rights and responsibilities for all are fundamental values of Oregonians, and;

WHEREAS, the initiative and legislative process must never be used to deprive any person of their basic human rights, and;

WHEREAS, the Governor of Oregon and the Legislature, elected representatives of the people of Oregon, have enacted the Oregon Equality Act (SB2 of the 2007 legislative session) and the Oregon Family Fairness Act (HB2007), and;

WHEREAS, without legally recognized domestic partnerships, a partner in a same-sex couple can lose all property or be highly taxed should the other partner pass away, and;

WHEREAS, domestic partnerships grant hospital visitation rights for same-sex couples and their families, and;

WHEREAS, without the Oregon Equality Act, a person can legally be fired from a job because of their sexual orientation, and;

WHEREAS, the economic and business appeal of the State of Oregon depends on its perception as a place where fairness is valued, and;

WHEREAS, discrimination against a group of people is contrary to the values of Oregonians;

NOW, THEREFORE, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON RESOLVES, AS

FOLLOWS:

Section 1. The Democratic Party of Oregon expresses its support for the Oregon Equality Act and the Oregon Family Fairness Act.

Section 2. The Democratic Party of Oregon is opposed to any repeal of the Oregon Equality Act and the Oregon Family Fairness Act.
