Portland, Ore (January 24, 2012) –

Tonight, Meredith Wood Smith, Chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon, released the following statement in response to President Obama's third State of the Union address:

“Tens of thousands across Oregon tuned in to the State of the Union address tonight looking for presidential leadership – they were not disappointed. I am proud of President Obama, not just for articulating the economic inequality felt by so many middle-class Americans, but also for presenting a real blueprint for an economy that’s built to last.

“This president has challenged us to work together to rebuild an America where hard work is rewarded, responsibility is celebrated, and everyone plays by the same rules. It’s an idea that resonates with middle-class Oregonians, and we are committed to supporting elected officials that share these values.

“In one week, voters in Oregon’s 1st Congressional District have an opportunity to elect someone who will accept President Obama’s challenge to fix this economy so it finally works for the middle class, not just the privileged few. Suzanne Bonamici has spent her life fighting for small businesses and protecting consumers.

“Suzanne is committed to cutting through the partisan gridlock in Congress, not adding to it; I hope every Oregonian with a ballot still sitting on the kitchen counter will vote to give our seniors and middle-class families the ally they deserve.”
