It may surprise Oregon voters that there’s at least one issue where Republican Rob Cornilles hasn’t tried to run from from his Tea Party roots—unfortunately for women in the 1st district, it’s a big one: the right for women to make their own health care decisions. In his failed 2010 congressional bid, Cornilles made no qualms about his far-right position on women’s health and reproductive rights, repeatedly touting that Oregon Right to Life — a group that opposes life-saving stem cell research, in-vitro fertilization, and abortion even in cases of rape, incest and health of the mother — had endorsed him in the Republican primary, even over other conservative Tea Party candidates.
Today, the Democratic Party of Oregon released a new web video reminding Oregon voters that Cornilles is again endorsed by Oregon Right to Life and hasn’t backed down from his extreme position on women’s health and reproductive rights.
“This year, Rob Cornilles is clearly hoping he can get elected without discussing women’s issues,” said Meredith Wood Smith, DPO Chair, “but even as he continues to pitch his say-anything, do-nothing approach on jobs and the economy, women in the 1st district deserve to know that Cornilles is equally clueless when it comes to choice, lockstep with the extreme wing of his party and their war on women’s rights.
“Rob Cornilles has repeatedly proven himself a finger-to-the-wind political candidate,” Wood Smith added. “That’s why it’s especially worrisome that his consistency starts at opposing a woman’s rights to choose. Luckily, voters will have a clear choice in this special election.”
