Oregon Democrats are preparing to send 84 delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, to be held the week of September 3, 2012. Delegates will be selected through an election process open to any Democrat in Oregon.
“We are committed to sending a delegation to the national convention that reflects the diversity of the Democratic Party in Oregon, and we will ensure a fair selection process that’s open to any registered Democrat,” said Meredith Wood Smith, Chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon.
Persons interested in serving as a delegate will be required to file the necessary forms online declaring their interest in being elected. The online candidacy forms will open on March 1, 2012. The deadline to file will be on May 17, 2012.
On June 2, 2012, each of the state’s five congressional districts will hold a convention, electing 47 of the 84 delegates.
On June 16, 2012 the Democratic Party of Oregon will hold a statewide convention where the 37 remaining delegates, as well as alternate delegates, will be elected.
Prior to delegate selection dates, representatives of the Democratic Party of Oregon will be fanning out across the state to provide informative presentations and workshops about becoming a delegate. Community groups interested in hosting a presentation are encouraged to contact the Democratic Party of Oregon. The presentations will provide an overview of what it means to be a delegate, how to get elected and a preview of what to expect. Additionally, in the spring of 2012 there will be a series of “Delegate Academy” workshops for individuals who are seriously considering a bid to be delegate at the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
