In response to the leak of the draft Supreme Court decision potentially ending reproductive freedom in the United States, KC Hanson, Chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon, said:

“Almost 50 years ago, the Supreme Court in an overwhelming majority found that the Right to Privacy certainly applied to a woman’s right to make reproductive health decisions. As Democrats, we fervently concur with this landmark decision, and our core beliefs hold that women have the sole jurisdiction over their own bodies.

“But the Supreme Court, for the first time in American history, is poised to rip that fundamental right away from Americans. This obscene overreach of judicial activism will immediately allow even the most abusive state laws to stand. These laws take many forms: from barring physicians from properly consulting with their patients, to restricting contraception access, to even stripping from women their right to end a rape-induced pregnancy.

As shocking as immediate abortion bans in many states will be, the foreboding cloud of what may come is even more ominous. Texas law darkly incentivizes vigilanties to “report” on women who seek abortions and those who support them. Oklahoma law declares life at fertilization, thus banning not only all abortions, but many varieties of contraception. A number of state laws do not even allow for exceptions that prioritize the pregnant woman’s health.

“This pending Supreme Court decision would open the door for a Republican Congress to pass a national law banning abortions; by 2025 abortion access for every American woman could disappear. Any number of other rights are at risk now that the Supreme Court thinks little of its own historical precedent.

“Oregon Democrats will fight like hell to preserve the fundamental right of Oregon women to keep the government out of their bodies, and protect the fundamental rights of all Americans and Oregonians. We must bring women’s rights back to the 21st Century.”

The Democratic Party joined with 52 other states in condemning this obscene draft decision. See here: https://dpo.org/news/press-releases/asdc-roe-scotus/
