Statement from KC Hanson, Chair, Democratic Party of Oregon:

“Our hearts hurt for the victims, their families, the Bend community, and everyone affected by yet another horrific shooting. We all deserve the freedom to shop for dinner, go to work, or drop our kids off at school without worrying about the threat of gun violence.

“This has to stop. The Democratic Party of Oregon recognizes that gun violence is a public health threat that needs to be dealt with seriously. We applaud President Biden and our congressional representatives for securing the first national gun legislation in 30 years and focusing on prevention. That said, we must continue the fight until these mass shootings are a thing of the past.

“We offer condolences to the families and friends of both victims, Glenn Edward Bennett and Donald Surrett Jr., who so deserve our support. We also share profound respect for Mr. Surrett, the Safeway employee and UFCW Local 555 member who gave his life as he heroically intervened and lessened the impact of this attack. Our heartfelt thanks to the first responders, Bend Police, and the team at St. Charles Hospital for their quick and lifesaving response.”
