Democratic Party of Oregon Chair Carla “K.C.” Hanson released the following statement:

“For anyone who has paid any attention to the Oregon GOP over the last few years, reading this resolution might be shocking, but it is not surprising.

“In the era of Trump, the Oregon GOP has seemingly given up on any effort to appeal to a majority of Oregonians. Oregon Republican legislators have repeatedly walked out of the legislature, blocking progress on issues that are important to everyday Oregonians. Their party leadership has increasingly aligned themselves with far-right conspiracy theories, and are now passing resolutions that falsely suggest that the insurrection on the U.S. Capitol was a “false flag” operation, likens it to the Reichstag Fire, and condemns the members of their own party who voted to hold Trump accountable for incitement of insurrection. It should come as little surprise that they just lost an election for the only statewide office that was held by a Republican.

“It’s ironic – but again, not surprising – that their statement decries some perceived effort “to erase the freedoms of liberties of millions of Americans,” while the resolution embraces and even celebrates Republican Congressman Cliff Bentz’s vote to object to the certification of Pennsylvania’s Electoral College votes, which if passed would have disenfranchised and thrown out the legally cast ballots of nearly 7 million Americans.

“Oregon Democrats are focused on advocating for the needs of Oregonians and fighting for our shared values. There is still much to be done, but we’re determined to do everything in our power to support the Biden/Harris administration and to help Oregon and America recover from the pandemic stronger than before.”
