In response to the U.S. Senate’s vote to acquit Donald Trump, Democratic Party of Oregon Chair Carla “K.C.” Hanson released the following statement:
“A few years ago, Donald Trump made the flip comment that he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and get away with it. Today, the U.S. Senate confirmed Trump’s assertion.
“By refusing to hold Trump accountable for his undeniable role in inciting the insurrection on the U.S. Capitol, the majority of GOP senators have confirmed to all Americans that their allegiance is neither to the Constitution nor the rule of law, but to one man.
“They have blatantly proclaimed that facts can be ignored and their oaths of office may be betrayed, so long as it is in service of their own political aspirations or to put the needs of their party above the needs of the country.
“A little over a month ago, rioters and insurrectionists desecrated the very chambers in which our elected officials make law and judgment. Today, rather than do the work to repair our democracy, those Senators only served to desecrate it further.
“They defile the memory of heroes — those who gave their lives to protect and defend them. These Senators act without honor and eviscerate the Oath to which they swore allegiance. Instead of protecting us against all enemies, they have acted to inspire and unleash them further.
“They have condoned and christened the insurrection that right-wing extremists have been promoting for decades, seemingly oblivious to the fact that the insurrection of January 6th would not have occurred without the enthusiastic voice of Donald Trump spurring the riot forward.
“The very foundation of the Capitol shakes and crumbles as much from these Senators’ grievous betrayal of their Oaths as from the mob’s destruction. It will be up to us to repair the foundations of our democracy. And we can only hope that the people, through a reinvigorated justice system, will see fit to hold the lead insurrectionist, Donald Trump, accountable for his criminal act.”
