RESOLUTION NO. 2023-04 Honoring the Life and Legacy of Alice Bartelt

A RESOLUTION OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON

WHEREAS, Alice Marie Bartelt was born on August 27, 1947, in Norfolk, Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Alice earned a bachelor’s degree from San Francisco State University and her Juris Doctor from Lewis & Clark Law School; and

WHEREAS, she married Richard (Dick) Alan Bartelt in 1966, who passed away in 2006; and

WHEREAS, a few years later, she met her new beloved life partner Paul Moore; and

WHEREAS, Alice served the American Association of University Women at local and national levels since 1970; and

WHEREAS, Alice served as the President of the League of Women Voters of Oregon, and was also been involved in Zonta International, Pro-Choice Oregon, Oregon Women Lawyers, the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon, the Washington County Democrats, the National and Oregon Association of Parliamentarians, and many other civic- and rights-focused organizations; and

WHEREAS, Alice was a champion for women’s rights; and

WHEREAS, Alice was always willing to step in when she was needed, which was often; and

WHEREAS, Alice had boundless knowledge of Robert’s Rules of Order and parliamentary procedure, serving honorably as the Parliamentarian of the Democratic Party of Oregon; and

WHEREAS, Alice was and will always be a dear friend of our Party and was committed to its success; and

WHEREAS, Alice passed unexpectedly, yet peacefully, at the age of 76 on August 29, 2023, after a life full of love and accomplishment; and

WHEREAS, there are not sufficient words to express our sorrow for her loss, nor to express our appreciation for her life of service;

NOW, THEREFORE, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:

We honor the life and legacy of Alice Bartelt as a champion for the rights of women and for her contributions to our country, the State of Oregon, and the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party of Oregon is forever grateful for her service and dedication. We are a better party because of Alice, as are our state and nation. We continue to keep her and her family close to our hearts. May her memory be a blessing.
