AN EMERGENCY RESOLUTION OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON
DEMANDING JUSTICE & HONORING THE LEGACY OF GEORGE FLOYD
WHEREAS, George Floyd was born on October 14, 1973 in Fayetteville, North Carolina; [1]
WHEREAS, The United States as a nation was built on systemic racism; [2]
WHEREAS, the state of Oregon was founded as a state for white persons only;
WHEREAS, police officers lied when they reported that George Floyd resisted arrest; [3]
WHEREAS, the Minneapolis police department’s initial news release was proven by video to be blatantly false when it stated that Floyd “appeared to be suffering medical distress” after he resisted arrest and was handcuffed; [3]
WHEREAS, on May 25, 2020, George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota after police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds;
WHEREAS, George Floyd was lying face down on the street, handcuffed and pleading for his life.; [4]
WHEREAS, during his nearly 9 minutes on the ground George Floyd repeatedly screamed “I can’t breathe”; [4]
WHEREAS, Officer Derek Chauvin kept his knee on George Floyd’s neck for nearly 3 minutes after George Floyd stopped moving and lost a pulse;
WHEREAS, George Floyd’s death has triggered protests and demonstrations against police brutality and Systemic Racism across the county;
WHEREAS, all of the police officers involved in the killing of George Floyd have been arrested and face charges in his killing; [5]
WHEREAS, George Floyd was laid to rest next to his mother on June 9, 2020 in Pearland, Texas; [6]
NOW, THEREFORE, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The Democratic Party of Oregon celebrates the life of George Floyd and offers its condolences to his family. The State Central Committee (SCC) is hereby directed to hold a 8 minute and 46 second moment of silence at the start of the next SCC meeting in honor of George Floyd.
Section 2. The Democratic Party of Oregon recognizes that systemic racism is a plague that has haunted our country for 400 years and demands that it be dismantled.
Section 3. The Democratic Party of Oregon calls on law enforcement agencies to end the use of choke holds and practices of restraining that may obstruct a suspect’s airway.
Section 4. The Democratic Party of Oregon calls for justice for George Floyd and his family. This includes but isn’t limited to: conviction of the officers involved to the fullest extent of the law, financial compensation, counseling expenses, education expenses for his children, etc.
