A RESOLUTION OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON

A RESOLUTION OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON In Support of Rapid and Effective Diplomatic and Humanitarian Responses in Yemen

WHEREAS, UNICEF and the World Health Organization have stated that “we are now facing the worst cholera outbreak in the world”, with over 436,000 suspected cholera cases reported in Yemen.

WHEREAS, The International Committee of the Red Cross states that 7000 new cases of cholera per day are being reported,half of which are children.

WHEREAS, Time is of the essence when facilitating relatively simple early interventions such as oral rehydration therapy, antibiotics, and water purification tablets.

WHEREAS, US foreign policy actions make us complicit in this humanitarian crisis.

WHEREAS, Article 7, Plank 6 states that “we support the use and primacy of diplomacy and negotiation to resolve regional and international conflicts and promote peace”.

NOW, THEREFORE, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1. Urges Oregon’s members of Congress to prioritize US humanitarian and diplomatic responses at the national level.

Section 2. Further urges Oregon’s members of Congress to press for development of rapid response solutions which may include air-dropped aid developed in concert with USAID, WHO, UNICEF, ICRC, etc.

Section 3. Further urges Senator Jeff Merkley to bring this matter up for study at the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
