Resolution 2017-005: To Call for a Statewide Carbon Tax to Fund Renewable Energy Projects.

A RESOLUTION OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON

WHEREAS, ARTICLE 6 TRANSPORTATION, ENERGY & THE ENVIRONMENT Plank 1 of the 2016 Democratic Party of Oregon Platform states:

“We believe the peer-reviewed scientific evidence that climate change is a global emergency caused by human activities, and we must take immediate actions to reduce our negative impacts necessary for the survival of our species”

WHEREAS, ARTICLE 6 TRANSPORTATION, ENERGY & THE ENVIRONMENT Plank 2 of the 2016 Democratic Party of Oregon Platform states:

“We support peer-reviewed science-based local and national strategies to implement sustainable energy technologies to reduce and prevent the degradation of our life support systems, including our atmosphere, global food supplies, and ocean and freshwater resources as imperative for long-term economic stability.”

WHEREAS, ARTICLE 1 JOBS, BUSINESS & LABOR Plank 12 of the 2016 Democratic Party of Oregon Platform states:

“We support making it easier and more financially rewarding for business to invest in creating, well-paying, clean-energy jobs.”

WHEREAS, The Democratic Party of Oregon’s 2016 Priority Legislative Action Items number seven reads:

“Respond to global climate change — the greatest threat to the survival of humanity– by instituting requirements to locate and contain the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere in accordance with the Pacific Coast Collaborative Agreement by establishing a carbon tax to fund transitioning to renewable energy production and energy efficiency programs.”

NOW, THEREFORE, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1. We strongly urge the Oregon Legislature and Governor to take immediate and bold action to create a statewide carbon tax to fund Oregon’s transition to 100% renewable energy production and improve energy efficiency programs.
