A RESOLUTION OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON
WHEREAS, there is a crisis in health care in the United States in which more than 47 million Americans are uninsured and countless others are underinsured and adversely affected by escalating costs of insurance premiums, deductibles and co-pays, and
WHEREAS, The Democratic Party of Oregon Legislative Agenda 2008 calls for adoption of a comprehensive Oregon health care system that provides universal coverage accessible to all Oregonians which includes a publicly owned, publicly administered, not-for-profit health care plan as one of the options available to Oregonians, and
WHEREAS, the Congress of the United States is considering how best to reform the health care system of our nation, and
WHEREAS, the insurance and pharmaceutical lobby is taking every possible step to ensure that a single payer system and a strong national public option such as Medicare for All (HR 676/S 703) are not given full and fair consideration in the discussions of national health care reform
WHEREAS, HR676 is planned to be voted on the floor of the House of Representatives after the August recess
NOW, THEREFORE, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. A single payer system shall be given full and fair consideration in all congressional discussions of health care reform, and
Section 2. A comprehensive strong national public insurance option must be included in any health care reform, and
Section 3. Members of the House of Representatives and the Senate elected from the State of Oregon are hereby urged to support a full and fair hearing for a single-payer system and a strong national public option congressional discussions of health care reform, and
Section 4. President Barack Obama and the State of Oregon congressional delegation are hereby urged to provide leadership in support of a full and fair hearing for a single-payer system and a strong national public option in congressional discussions of health care reform.
