Resolution 2008-037: Supporting HR 799 (Vice Presidential Impeachment)

A RESOLUTION OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON

Democrats have called for investigation into the Bush Administration’s misrepresentations to the American people and to Congress in the run up to the Iraq War, and impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney for high crimes and misdemeanors. Passed at October 10th, 2007 meeting of the Second Congressional District, a resolution was sponsored by Ben Talley, whose son Chris Talley died in 2006 of complications relating to an Iraq War injury he suffered in 2004. Chris died 2 years 8 months and 15 days after the day President Bush declared “Mission Accomplished” in Iraq.

WHEREAS, House Resolution 799 was submitted to the House of Representatives during the 110th United States Congress on April 24, 2007 laying out three articles of impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney. AND WHEREAS, House resolution 799 has been referred to the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties of the House Judiciary Committee. Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) chairs the subcommittee that is chaired by Rep. Jerold Nadler (D-NY) and the Judiciary Committee. The resolution currently has twenty-four co-sponsors. Several of the co-sponsors are members of the House Judiciary Committee and two are members of the House Sub-committee on Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties.

AND WHEREAS H. Res. 799 charges that Vice President Cheney: • Has purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States by fabricating a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, AND • Has fabricated a threat about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda, in order To justify the use of the U.S. Armed Forces against Iraq in a manner damaging to U.S. national security interests; AND • In violation of his constitutional oath and duty, has openly threatened aggression against Iran, absent any real threat to the United States, and has done so with the proven U.S. capability to carry out such threats, thus undermining U.S. national security.

NOW, THEREFORE THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF OREGON RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1: THAT the State Central Committee of the Democratic Party of Oregon affirms its support for H. Res. 799;

Section 2: THAT the Democratic Party of Oregon will publicize its support for H.Res.799 in accordance with the Media Policy Guidelines for Resolutions of the state party;

Section 3: THAT a copy of Resolution 07-37 will also be forwarded to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
