PORTLAND, Oregon (March 23, 2010) –

Democratic Party of Oregon Chair Meredith Wood Smith issued the following statement following President Obama’s historic signing of comprehensive health insurance reform:

“Today, President Obama signed into law groundbreaking health reform that will lower costs for American families and small businesses, expand coverage to millions – something Presidents have tried to do for decades.  Oregonians should be proud of our Democratic members in Congress that fought hard and tackled one of the most difficult public-policy issues of modern times.

“Health insurance reform will provide unprecedented protections for every American consumer and will put health care decisions back into the hands of families. Insurance companies will no longer be able to deny you coverage because of pre-existing conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure or asthma, or drop coverage when you get sick and need it the most.

“These historic reforms came despite the best efforts of Congressman Walden and his Republican colleagues to block reform.  Since President Obama took office, Republicans have been perusing a strategy to block, kill, or delay every piece of legislation President Obama and the Democrats have put forward – no matter the stakes. For the last year, Republicans have played politics with our health – standing with insurance companies instead of middle class Oregonians.

“I join Oregonians in thanking President Obama and the Oregon Democratic caucus for their strong leadership and their fight to get Oregon doctors and hospitals equitable Medicare reimbursements. This historic day is an important turning point for our country and for the millions of families and business that will see their health care costs go down as their access to quality care grows.”
