Democratic Party of Oregon Chair Carla “KC” Hanson released the following statement:

“Last night, the Supreme Court of the United States effectively banned abortion in Texas when it declined to overturn SB 8, a blatantly unconstitutional Texas law that bans abortion after only 6 weeks, which is before most women even know that they are pregnant. It provides no exceptions for incest or rape and encourages private citizens to act as bounty hunters.

“Today my heart is with the millions of people in Texas, particularly those with low incomes or from marginalized communities, who will disproportionately feel the effect of this travesty. The right to an abortion is basic health care and the exercise of personal and private liberty. Fifty years of judicial precedent supports the right to an abortion, but we are witnessing the endgame of Republican lawmakers who spent the last decade stacking the judicial system with right-wing judges and justices to do their dirty work.

“In 2017, Oregon Democrats passed the Reproductive Health Equity Act, ensuring that any person in Oregon, no matter where they live or how much they make, has access to reproductive health care. We won’t stop fighting until every American has those same rights and protections.”
