PORTLAND, OR – Today, after the House GOP voted to elect Rep. Mike Johnson as speaker of the House, Oregon Democratic Party Chair Rosa Colquitt, PhD, released the following statement:
“Republicans Lori Chavez-DeRemer and Cliff Bentz just voted for the most extreme speaker of the House in history. Mike Johnson’s deeply unpopular MAGA agenda will be an absolute disaster for Oregon families. He won his party’s vote by passing every MAGA litmus test: leading efforts to overturn the 2020 election, voting to pass a national abortion ban, and supporting the slashing of Social Security and Medicare for millions of Oregon’s seniors.
Lori Chavez-DeRemer and Cliff Bentz have clearly stated that Mike Johnson’s anti-choice, anti-LGBTQ+, and anti-climate science stances were okay by them when they voted for their MAGA House speaker. Oregonians have shown time and again that we are not in alignment with the national MAGA agenda, but unfortunately, Rep. Chavez-DeRemer and Rep. Bentz are at odds with their constituents. It’s up to us to make sure all voters remember the consequences of this disastrous election for House Speaker come November 2024.”
