Portland, OR – The Democratic Party of Oregon issued the following statement regarding the Senate deal to end the Republican shutdown:

“Democrats have stood firm on the demand that Republicans back off from their attempts to destroy Medicaid and withhold SNAP food assistance from Americans,” DPO Chair Nathan Soltz said. “Republicans are selling out working people in order to pay for $4 trillion in tax cuts for billionaires. That hasn’t changed as a result of the Senate deal to end the Republican shutdown. The Democratic Party of Oregon applauds Senator Wyden and Senator Merkley for voting no on the funding package, which falls far short of the responsibilities Congress has to the American people.”

Republicans are continuing their efforts to:

  • Cut federal healthcare funding by $1 trillion
  • Cut SNAP benefits for 42 million Americans
  • Grow the national debt by trillions of dollars
  • Cut taxes for the wealthiest Americans by $4 trillion

All while the President continues to build a lavish ballroom and go on taxpayer-funded golf trips.

“Most Democrats in Congress have sent a strong message that we will not be complicit in causing suffering for Americans to pay for billionaire tax cuts,” Soltz said. “We thank Oregon’s Democratic members of Congress for continuing to fight for what’s right.”
