Portland, OR — In the days following the tragic October 15th shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, communities around the state are asking what can be done to prevent this from happening again. In a recent interview, MAGA extremist Christine Drazan suggested more armed police in schools, despite little supporting evidence that they would reduce gun violence, building on her consistent record of opposing common sense gun safety reforms. Some of the most noteworthy instances of Drazan siding with the gun lobby over Oregonians’ safety include:
- Bragging that she killed House Bill 3076B, which would have established a state gun dealer licensing program and reduced illegal gun trafficking.
- Voting against Senate Bill 554, Oregon’s law requiring firearms to be stored safely.
- Receiving an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association.
- Supporting policies that would would weaken Oregon’s red flag law if elected governor.
- Pledging to veto any bill that she claims would infringe on second amendment rights.
Meanwhile, Governor Tina Kotek announced a series of executive actions today focused on supporting those impacted by the Silver Rail shooting. Those actions include expediting background checks for substitute teachers, providing state funds to cover building repairs, assigning full time Department of Education staff to support the district in applying for federal grants, and more.
“America is the only developed nation in the world where gun violence towards children happens this frequently. That is a policy failure, and for some reason Republicans like Christine Drazan refuse to engage in an honest discussion about what needs to be done to fix this,” said Democratic Party of Oregon Chair Nathan Soltz. “Christine Drazan is on the wrong side of this issue, plain and simple. Backing talking points from the gun lobby instead of looking at what’s working in every other developed nation is a failed strategy, and not what Oregonians need from their elected leaders right now.”
