Why intern for the Democratic Party of Oregon?
An internship with the Democratic Party of Oregon (DPO) is a great way to help elect Oregon Democrats and get an insider view of Oregon politics. Whether you are trying to decide if you would like to pursue a career in politics, or just want to try something new, an internship with DPO is a great way to network and gain first-hand experience.
Specifically, this internship will provide opportunities to develop skills and experience in political organizing and field campaigns in addition to building relationships with the political community across the state.
The environment at the DPO is also an egalitarian, team-oriented, and supportive place to learn. We take interest in our interns’ professional goals and to strive to make their experience at the DPO as mutually beneficial as possible. Upon completion of the internship, interns will receive letters of recommendation, references, and resume reviews.
What will I do while working at the Democratic Party of Oregon?
Interns will work closely with the staff on projects including:
- Building core organizing skills, such as canvassing and phonebanking;
- Developing networks with political leaders and community members;
- Organizing volunteers for campaign and community action projects; and
- Getting out the vote for Democrats by talking to voters right now!
In addition to the above, DPO interns also help:
- Assist with and attend party meetings, conventions, fairs, trainings, service events, donor outreach, and other DPO projects as needed
- Perform basic office functions such as answering phones, responding to messages, and data entry
- Receive guests and volunteers as they enter the office, answer general questions
- Assisting with research to help support the DPO leadership team and communications team
What is the commitment?
- Our Internship will last 3-4 months, according to each applicant’s schedule. Interns are expected to commit 10-20 hours per week during the 9-5 business day with occasional evening and weekend events and activities. Summer internships will start in May/June and extend to August/September.
- The DPO maintains a business casual work environment, and interns are required to dress and act appropriately. The majority of contact that the DPO has with the public is through phone calls, walk-ins, and organizational meetings. Interns must act professional and accommodating to callers or guests who come to the office.
What are the qualifications and expectations for this internship?
The ideal intern has:
- A passion for supporting Democratic Candidates and Causes
- Keen attention to detail in a must
- Ability to work independently and learn quickly
- Excellent social and critical thinking skills
- Aptitude for creative thinking and output
- A positive, can-do attitude and enthusiasm for the task at hand
- Basic technological proficiency, especially familiarity with google suite
- Commitment to maintaining office standards of confidentiality and discretion
- Ability to be fluid with job duties and responsibilities
What is the compensation?
Democratic Party of Oregon interns are paid $18/hr.
